Most startup companies neglect to even consider Arabic translation in their list of things to do. A Jordanian entrepreneur located in Silicon Valley feels that this is a huge error on the part of these companies.
Hani Morrar is a business development manager for a web translation company called Darawak, which is listed in the 500 Startups Accelerator program. Mr. Morrar has written and stated that entrepreneurs are losing out the first mover advantage by neglecting the Middle East.
He has quoted on his 500 Startups blog, “Even though the Arab world is home to more than 60 million smartphone users and 90 million people on the Internet, Arabic is widely regarded as the most under-served language on the internet. And less than 1 percent of all apps are available in Arabic. Talk about a BIG ASS missed opportunity.”
Research has shown that Morrar has a valid point. The Common Sense Advisory did research and showed that the Arabic speaking users online far exceed the Russian, French and German speaking users combined. It also stated that out of the top 100 Web brands, only 4 provide Arabic content.
Morrar writes that this is a huge chunk of potential users who are relatively easy to reach if attempts are made to engage them. If companies made attempts to use Google Translate or engage a professional translation services company to provide some Arabic content, it would put them well ahead of their peers.
He goes on to state that, “Many people still have completely false ideas of what life is like in the modern Arab world. People use the internet. They go on Facebook. And they use apps, websites and almost everything else people use in the United States. Most of them have never ridden a camel, and many Arabs spend just as much time browsing silly Internet websites as you do.”
