Ethical Conduct for Translators

Ethics are an important parts of everyday business. In many circumstances, organizations and associations create ethical codes to establish rules and a difference between “right” & “wrong”. In the aspect of translators, the ethics are applied in professional practice. One such organization providing ethical rules for translators to follow is the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters, Ltd.

The Accreditation organization does not maintain a code of ethics for translators, but does offer some guidelines. Obtaining the credentials and name of the organization, a translator would need to uphold the ethical conduct and standards; otherwise could face termination from the credentials.

Due to the transfer of knowledge from one language to another; a translator may experience some situations throughout the profession where there is pressure from time or from individuals to transfer words and sentences quickly without properly ensuring the true meanings behind the intent of the author. Taking a short cut, or changing a perception because one may not agree with the content would be an ethical breach of conduct.

Some issues and ethical principles to follow as a translator are: to respect the privacy and confidentiality of the client, to disclose any conflicts of interest, decline work beyond competence levels, relay information impartially and accurately, do not engage in self-promotion and maintain detachment, and do not use inside information for personal gain.

Maintaining ethics is an important part of the business aspect for a translator. If discovered an individual who is translating is unethical, not only would it harm business operations for the individual, but could hurt the potential for others who are seeking a profession in translation.

When a company or client hires a translator, there is an unwritten contract of trust occurring between the two people. When hired, an expectation arises that the translation will be accurate, and stay true to the original document; especially with proper punctuation, grammar, spelling and writing style. Keeping to the ethics will create more business opportunities while keep clients happy and the translator out of trouble.
