Abdullah Project Provides Dual Translation of Sermons
Non-Arab worshipers are able to receive up-to-date translations of sermons given in Makkah’s Grand Mosque on Fridays. The facility was officially launched on Friday as part of the King Abdullah Project.
Qualified translators provide the interpretation in English and Urdu.
Through the use of headsets and compact audio devices provided by authorities of the Grand Mosque, the English and Urdu worshipers are provided a dedicated location in the Haram, where, through a radio frequency that broadcasts the Arabic-delivered sermons, they can hear an interpretation of the Iman of Haram, Abdul Hafez Al-Shubaiti’s message in their native tongue. Headsets will not be given to worshipers in any other area, per the decision handed down by the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques Affairs, King Fahd Gate. He also specified that a separate room for interpretation be set up and marked as sensitive. In this location, highly skilled interpreters perform their translations.
Whether mobile phones that come equipped with FM frequency reception enable other people to use their own devices to participate in the service is unknown at this time.
Two Holy Mosques Affairs president, Shaikh Abdu Rahman Al-Sudais, is passionate about ensuring that the Friday sermons and other information from Arabic into the foreign languages indicated actually benefit non-Arab worshipers.
The statement on this issue indicated that Al-Sudais mooted the notion to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah. He is credited with approving it.
Future plans include developing a correspondent translation facility which will be launched in the Prophet Mosque in Madinah. Due to the uptick in the number of Umrah pilgrims, authorities recently introduced Urdu translation facilities for Islamic guidance and counseling section of the Grand Mosque in Makkah.
